Music You Should Check Out: Cosmic Taste's "Cancel.wav"
“Cancel Wav.” is a gumbo of sounds. Insert ‘I Think You Should Leave’ meme here.
The album is a charcuterie board of genres, the most explicit being alternative rock. The opening track, “Last Dungeon,” is brash and corrosive. Weaving bouncy video game synths against grungy guitar riffs. The intro serves as a proclamation from the group. Dewayne and Keebler, the duo that makes up Cosmic Taste, label their style of music as “Pomona Sound.” The city of Pomona is a hub of artists from all walks of life. The sounds that come out of the city are a mixture of alt, metal, heavy, and surf rock, hip hop, and r&b. Listening to “Cosmic.wav” is like going to a house party in Pomona, with each song acting as a group on the lineup.
Cosmic Taste masterfully envelopes you into a world of aggression, bad dates, and self-assurance. “Kindred” transports us to a prom in 86. Dewayne sings melancholy over dreamy guitar riffs. The instrumental tracks "Hipster Bitches” and “Rush” serve as soundtracks for your drive or house party; “Hipster Bicthes” being an ode to psych and surf rock. “Friday” is a humorous look at a failed attempt to go out and hook up. The duo recounts their dates and their attempts at finding a connection during these weird times.
Songs like “Over” and “Boss Shit” stand out due to the world the song creates. ‘Over’ is a beautiful slow jam about lost love. It’s a song you put on a Sunday to clean your house. ‘Boss Shit’ is my personal favorite and favors the likes of Giacchino’s Incredibles score, a bossa nova track that transcends the listener to another plane.
“Cancel.wav” is a welcome offering from the talented duo. This quilt of an album is stitched meticulously and lovingly by two Pomona Boys and the city that inspires them.
The album is available for purchase and streaming exclusively on Bandcamp.com
